Preventing Accidental Injury

Fire Safety

Did you know that residential fires and burns are the number one danger to childern in the home? Each year nearly 1,000 childern are killed and thousands more are injured.

Many people don't know that kids react differently to fire than adults. They often hide under beds or in closets thinking they are safe. Older childern mistakenly think they can control the fire. Some fear blame, so they can fail to alert an adult.

Teaching kids about fire safety may save their lives.

Kids Message

Hey kids! Putting out fires can be scary and very dangerous. Everday firefighters risk their lives to make sure others are safe.

But, firefighters cannot be everywhere. You can help make their job easier and maybe even safe your life. Remember to:

  • NEVER PLAY WITH MATCHES AND LIGHTERS.
  • TELL AN ADULT IF YOU FIND A LIGHTER OR MATCHES.
  • MAKE SURE AN ADULT LIGHTS THE CANDLES ON A BIRTHDAY CAKE, A CAMPFIRE OR A BARBECUE.

What is Fire?

You've seen fires on television and in the movies. Most of the time they look like slow-moving flames with large, puffy white clouds of smoke. But real fires aren't like that at all.

REAL FIRES ARE FAST

In a few minutes your whole house could be on fire.

REAL FIRES ARE HOT

Temperatures can be more than 600 degrees.

REAL FIRES ARE DARK

You won't be able to breathe and you can't see anything.

REAL FIRES ARE DANGEROUS

No matter how small. If you see a fire, get out and tell an adult.
