Fire Safety Did you know that residential fires and burns are the number one danger to childern in the home? Each year nearly 1,000 childern are killed and thousands more are injured. Many people don't know that kids react differently to fire than adults. They often hide under beds or in closets thinking they are safe. Older childern mistakenly think they can control the fire. Some fear blame, so they can fail to alert an adult. Teaching kids about fire safety may save their lives. Kids Message Hey kids! Putting out fires can be scary and very dangerous. Everday firefighters risk their lives to make sure others are safe. But, firefighters cannot be everywhere. You can help make their job easier and maybe even safe your life. Remember to:

FIRE FACTThe first smoke detectors for homes cost more than $100. Today, a smoke detector costs between $6 and $25. FIRE FACTMost battery-operated smoke detectors will make a "chirping" sound when the battery needs replacing. But, don't rely on this as your only reminder to change the battery. FIRE FACTIn 1871, Mrs. O'Leary's cow knocked over a kerosene lamp in Chicago. The fire spread quickly and killed 300 people, left 900,000 people homeless and destroyed 2,124 acres of land. FIRE FACTIn 1658, Governor Peter Stuyvesant selected men to patrol the streets of the colony that is now New York and watch for fires. These men were called the "rattle watch" because they shook wooden rattles to alert people when a fire was found.

Smoking & Home Fires Every year, almost 1,000 smokers and non-smokers are killed in home fires caused by cigarettes and other smoking materials. The U.S. Fire Administration is working to help prevent home fire deaths and injuries caused by smoking materials. Fires caused by cigarettes and other smoking materials are preventable.
